Dallas Mavericks GM Nico Harrison pleaded for help online after receiving life-threatening messages following the Luka Dončić trade.

Dallas Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison has reportedly become the target of death threats following the team’s controversial trade of star point guard Luka Dončić.

These threats have sparked concern, leading to a significant increase in security measures

as the Mavericks prepare for their first home game since the shocking trade.

On Friday, February 7, ESPN reporter Tim MacMahon revealed during an appearance on the network

that Harrison has been subjected to severe backlash, including death threats and racial epithets.

The threats come on the heels of the trade, which has angered many Mavericks fans.

MacMahon explained that this turmoil has led to a tense atmosphere surrounding the team, with planned protests outside the American Airlines Center on the day of the Mavericks’ game against the Houston Rockets.

“This is a heartbroken franchise, and there have been some very unfortunate developments regarding that anger,” MacMahon said. “Nico Harrison has been subjected to death threats. There have been racial epitaphs included in some of those,” he added. MacMahon further noted that security would be heightened for the game, with Harrison not sitting in his usual seat to avoid any potential security risks. “There will be protests outside the arena, that is planned. Security will certainly be beefed up. Nico Harrison is not going to be in his normal seat in the stands.”

The decision to trade Dončić, a player considered by many as one of the best in the NBA, has left fans reeling. Dončić, who is just 25 years old, has been the face of the Mavericks for years, and many supporters feel betrayed by the trade. On February 1, the shocking deal was announced, sending Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers in a three-player trade that also involved the Mavericks acquiring center Anthony Davis.

Harrison defended the trade in an interview with ESPN, explaining that he believes the addition of Davis, an All-NBA player with a strong defensive mindset, would improve the Mavericks’ chances of winning championships both now and in the future. “I believe that defense wins championships,” Harrison said. “I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We’re built to win now and in the future.”

Despite Harrison’s justification, many fans were quick to voice their dissatisfaction. On social media, the trade was widely criticized, with some accusing Harrison of making one of the worst trades in NBA history. One X (formerly Twitter) user wrote, “Nico just made one of the worst trades of all time. You do not trade a perennial MVP candidate in their mid-20s under any circumstances. It’s nonsensical and there’s absolutely no justification for what happened. They just went to the FINALS!!!!”

However, there are others who believe Harrison should not bear the full brunt of the outrage. On February 7, MacMahon discussed the situation on *The Hoop Collective Podcast*, noting that Harrison likely wasn’t the sole decision-maker behind the trade. “I don’t believe Nico acted alone. I do not believe that. But he’s the one who’s taking the heat,” MacMahon said, suggesting that the decision was likely made by a broader group within the Mavericks’ front office.

While the controversy surrounding the trade has intensified, it’s clear that Harrison is facing immense pressure from both fans and critics. The death threats, racial slurs, and protests underscore the high emotions surrounding Dončić’s departure from Dallas, a city that has embraced him as one of its most beloved athletes.

The situation has also brought attention to the sometimes harsh reality of being in a high-profile position in professional sports. Harrison, who has been with the Mavericks since 2021, is now navigating the challenging fallout from what many see as a risky and divisive move. With protests planned for upcoming games and the public backlash intensifying, it’s clear that the trade’s ripple effects will continue to impact the team and its leadership for the foreseeable future.

As the Mavericks move forward in the post-Dončić era, the future of the franchise hangs in the balance, and Nico Harrison will undoubtedly remain at the center of the storm as he attempts to guide the team through these turbulent times. The events that unfold in the coming months will likely determine whether this trade was a stroke of genius or a move that fans will never forgive.
